Each watercolor portrait has its own story, especially when you consider that each animal and person painted was not from my imagination, but from someone I've personally known. Today's portrait story is Colton. When my wife and I were living up north, we purchased our first place only a year after getting married. It was our first opportunity to really decorate and do some remodeling. We belonged to a small condo community and with that came the 'fun' of being part of the condo association. Meetings were usually held at our neighbor's place and that's where we first met Colton. He was an imaginative and creative kid, typical of a seven year old boy. After getting to know the family more, it somehow came up that I had done watercolor portraits for friends and family. They asked if I could paint a portrait of their son with his baby cousin. When I look at Colton's picture, seeing his smile, I'm reminded of a time of security; a time in life without worry of what the future holds. It also reminds me that just as a child from a good home is protected from the cares of this world, so are those who have placed their trust in their Creator and Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Why worry? Consider this - The God who spoke the world into existence is the same God who sent His only begotten Son to become a man, never stopped being God, and paid the price for the rebellion of mankind against his Creator. What good news! The God who rose from the grave after paying for our sins upon that Cross almost 2,000 years ago is the same God who calls all who are weak and weary to come to Him. -Matthew 11:28 Even though we have all sinned, selfishly trying to live independently of the only true and living God; even though we've all turned to our own ways, His truth and love entered into time, space and matter as Jesus Christ, paying the eternal price only we deserve to pay. Jesus promises that all who come to Him, not one will He cast away. Only His children know a peace that surpasses all that this world has to offer. All earthly cares, riches, toils and pleasures will eventually fade like the flowers, but what a relief to know that this life affords all the opportunity to turn to the One who promises to forgive us of all our sins against Him, in whom we can trust and be secure in for eternity. In John 5:24 Jesus says, "Verily, verily, I say unto you , He that hears my word, and believes on Him that sent me, has everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life." In John 8:31-32 Jesus says, "If you remain in my Word, my disciples you will be and you will know the truth and the truth will set you free." What a relief to know that these promises are true and more real than anything this world has to offer! As I see Colton's portrait, I'm reminded of the true story of a child's appreciation for his Father's love and salvation, which brings true freedom, peace and joy for not only this life, but for eternity.
